On this coming Saturday, June 15th at 10 am, the Village of Woodlawn will kick off its annual Juneteenth Celebration with our “Freedom Lap” 5K Run/Walk. I know there are many celebrations around Cincinnati, but this event is exceptionally different. Here’s what we’re showcasing:

  1. Freedom Lap 5K Walk/Run co-sponsored by the Army National Guard and dedicated to the Mauritanian Immigrants. This is the only Juneteenth 5K Run/Walk being offered in Hamilton County
  2. We have the first and only Juneteenth Mini Art Museum which was customed and designed for our event
  3. The Underground Railroad Tour features some re-enactments and never-experienced onsite tours at Landmark Church grounds. Co-sponsored by the Eckstein Cultural Center and Landmark Church
  4. Hoop at the Fireworks Basketball Tournament sponsored by CALL A PLAY Athletics
  5. Freedom Baseball Tournament sponsored by the Cincinnati Reds
  6. And then there’s the Fireworks Show – one of a kind in the State of Ohio

Regarding the 5K Run, we’re dedicating this year’s race to the Mauritanian Immigrants who have taken residency in the Village of Lockland, which has caused many residents in the ZONE 15 communities (Lockland, Lincoln Heights, Wyoming, and Woodland) to rally support for this large yet quiet asylum-seeking community.

While many runners will participate in the challenge of the race, we forget there are others, like the Mauritanians, who are still running to liberate from slavery. In 2007, Mauritania, located in West Africa, criminalized slavery, however, human rights observers say the practice is ongoing, with some 30,000-60,000 Black Mauritanians enslaved today. According to the United Nations, that’s about 10-20% of the nation’s 3.4 million residents.

When celebrating Juneteenth, we understand that Freedom isn’t FREE. It’s fought for. When Mauritanians fled their country, they came to America, Lockland, Ohio, hoping to find a better life. Unfortunately, they struggle even more. New arrivals can’t work right away, which puts a strain on the resources that organizations like Valley Interfaith Community Resource Center (Lockland, Ohio) and a group of Wyoming Churches try to offer, but there’s only so much they can provide. The language barrier, the fear of being deported, re-enslaved, and even death is constantly looming in their minds. Nevertheless, they understand that Freedom isn’t FREE. The Mauritanians are relentless and ready to run their race; patiently lapping each challenge until they cross the finish line!

The Village of Woodlawn is championing the cause to provide a more humane experience to its newest Zone 15 residents. Through our “Freedom Lap” 5K Run/Walk, we’re passing the baton of support to all who are interested in helping build a life of meaning and purpose for the Mauritanians and all other marginalized populations that continue to face the same challenges and inequities. We’re calling on the Tri-State Community to relay together during this Juneteenth Celebration to end Slavery for all!
